Rekawa Beach
Description
Rekawa Beach is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in Sri Lanka. It can be reached from Tangalla via Tangalla Road. The beach is visited by five species of sea turtle (see p25) that come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the sand. Although turtles lay eggs all year round at Rekawa, the best time to spot them is between March and September. Note that April and May are usually the busiest months for turtle nesting. The ideal time for turtle watch is around the full moon when they emerge out of the ocean onto the beach in large numbers and there is sufficient natural light to see them. Turtle watches are held at night, usually, from 8 pm onwards It might take hours or only a few minutes to spot a turtle, so be prepared for a wait Locals are spread out along the sand and will signal with a torch when a turtle has been spotted. Be aware that flash photography is not allowed as the light disturbs the turtles and confuses any hatchlings trying to make their way to the sea. There is a small hut at the top of the path where some information on turtles is exhibited.
