sleepy fishing town, Weligama lies within the crescent-shaped Weligama Bay; visitors can check out the catch of the day at the roadside fish stalls. The town has also become a popular spot with surfers, especially beginners, as the waves here are fairly constant. A number of guesthousess trung out along the Matara Road offer board for hire and surf lessons.
Weligama is probably most famous for being home to Taprobane Island, which lies a short way offshore. The island was owned by the French Count de Mauny-Talvande in the 1930s,who built an elegant mansion here. Covered in verdantt rees, it now offers luxury accommodation complete with a private chef.
